Metropolitan City: infrastructure and services

Complex transport networks require intelligent optimization.

When we talk about Smart Mobility City, we refer to metropolitan areas characterized by a complex system of roads, motorways and railway systems of different types, but also by other infrastructures and transport services for mobility.

There are many achievements regarding the mobility on the territory that are now considered by the media as “smart”. Whether it is about innovative systems for road traffic control (Tutor, Intelligent Cameras, ZTL) or optimization of service areas (parking automation, charging services for electric cars), we hold permissible to “talk” of smart initiatives, but not yet of “smart cities”.

The complexity of the networks and transport services available in a metropolitan area – together with extremely heterogeneous nature of the people and goods movements, resulting from the considerable dynamism of all economic productive, social, leisure and tourist activities – requires drawing on the most effective forms of “intelligence”, able to provide an answer to every need for information, management and optimization related to decisions on the moving persons and goods.

Integrated and shared systems to make available data and intervention procedures

For Duel, a Smart Mobility City is a city where:

  • All roads in the own territory, or at least all roads relevant to the traffic, are monitored by intelligent and capable systems, able to automatically report anomalous events due to traffic intensity or crossing restrictions;
  • There is a system for tracking local public transport by road or rail with continuous verification of the level of service: i.e., deviations and delays on expected service times;
  • Monitoring and tracking system of the territory of the Local Public Transport (LPT) are connected with a central system;
  • The subsystems for road traffic control and the optimization of road service areas are connected with the central service and can receive remote operation commands
  • The airport or ship information systems (if any) and the railway information system serving the city are also connected with the central system;
  • The central system automatically shares (according to common rules) data, information and intervention procedures with the Traffic Police and the operators of the LPT.

In order for the central system to become the “Mobility Control Centre”, it will be necessary to work on the definition of rules for the management and transmission of information and communications. These rules must be able to guarantee their validity, timeliness, correct updating, selective addressing, synchronization, certification and consistency, both for mobility operators and users.

The rules, defined and agreed between the different bodies and authorities, must be assigned to an expert System that has the possibility of providing for:

  • The automatic production of an action and the transmission of information, following events detected by tools and/or elaborated by information system;
  • Alternatively, reporting the detected elaborated events to operators, together with a proposal for information or an action which will only be implemented with the authorization of the competent operator.

We are talking about a project and an implementation process for Smart Mobility City that is extremely complex.

Our company, therefore, has drawn up guidelines set for a correct involvement of the actors and creators of the “smart mobility city” and a methodology for carrying out the feasibility study.

The study – starting from the status of the infrastructure art, equipment’s, transport services – will identify the objectives consistent with vision of the smart city and that are also feasible in terms of economic sustainability, regulatory/organizational compatibility and the implementation horizon.
